
Cristian Gaţu (born August 20, 1945 in Bucharest from an Aromân family from Nize Pole, Republic of Macedonia) is the best Romanian handball player who competed in the 1972 Summer Olympicsand in the 1976 Summer Olympics. He has been the president of the Romanian Handball Federation since 1996.
In 1972, he won the bronze medal with the Romanian team. He played all six matches and scored five goals.
Four years later, he won the silver medal as part of the Romanian team. He played all five matches and scored eight goals.
With Steaua Bucharest he won the gold medal of EHF Champion League in 1977, performance that is unique in the Romanian handbal history.
